Getting to Know You Better

Mission: Mission 1 - From Normal to Super
Location: Dorm Common Area
Timeline: 2018/09/07 1800

“I’m so glad that we finally did this,” Nate said to Kit as he sat in the common area of her dorm floor. He had brought a small metal model kit that he picked up at a nearby hobby shop. He was looking forward to spending a bit more time with Kit. They’d had a nice coffee date a few days ago, and a rough day when her power manifested. He was hoping to get to know her better still. Despite Aiden's encouragement, he hadn't quite gotten the nerve to ask her out properly, but this was a nice step.

Kit smiled down at Nate from where she was curled up in one of the armchairs, her loom in her hands as she worked the needle through the material stretched across it. She had started this particular project a week or so ago, so there was still much to be done before it was completed. She enjoyed Nate's company, he was easy to talk with and made her laugh despite the stress of her power manifesting.

“So what are you working on?” Nate asked, the image on Kit’s loom not formed enough to be recognizable yet.

"It's a rose in full bloom. Or it will be when I get it finished." Kit told him. She'd been doing this long enough that she no longer needed to draw the image of what she wanted on the fabric stretched across the loom. She'd done hundreds of roses over the last several years and could just about do one blindfolded or in the dark.

“That’ll be so pretty,” Nate commented. “Red?” He couldn’t see any colour on the pedals yet.

Kit shook her head, "Nah, not red. I'm going to do it in yellow, with hints of gold so it will shimmer in the light." She was actually rather looking forward to seeing how this was going to turn out. She's never used this color of thread before now. It had called to her at the store, so she'd taken a chance and bought it.

“Oh, wow,” Nate said, looking at the gold thread in her bag. “My sisters didn’t cross-stitch, but Jane loved to knit. I have a red scarf she made me somewhere in my room. Not that I think it will ever get cold enough to wear it.” He sat back down in front of his model kit and checked to make sure that they were alone. “So, if you don’t mind me asking, has anything else happened since the last time I saw you?”

Like Nate, Kit's head lifted and swiveled this way and that to ensure there was no one in sight to overhear their conversation before she answered him. "I'm not a hundred percent sure since it felt like a dream, but I think I turned into a bird. Couple of nights ago I dreamt that I was an owl and flew all over the campus. So when I woke up, my window was open, but I had left it that way so that's not why I think it wasn't just a dream." Kit took a deep breath and let it out slowly, her shoulder falling with it. "There was a big white feather caught in the window pane." Kit lapsed back into silence, very glad that she had a single room.

“This might be a weird idea,” Nate said, “but have you thought about setting up a camera? Just for a night or two, but maybe it will capture you transforming and coming back. It might tell you how long you’re gone for.” He shifted in his seat. “Or maybe set up something that notifies me or Drew if you transform?” He had a worried look in his eye as he faced Kit. “I...I’d hate for what happened earlier to happen again. I’m scared about what might happen if someone other than Drew and I had found you.”

Kit blinked when Nate suggested she set up a camera. "I guess I could. I didn't think of that." Not that she was sure she wanted to see what happened to her when she shifted into animal form. The color drained from her cheeks when he brought someone else finding her naked and vulnerable as she had been when her brother and Nate stumbled over her so recently. She ducked her head, hands shaking as she struggled to stay calm. Kit's thick dark hair fell forward, hiding her face from him.

Nate noticed her change in pallor and stood right away to stand closer to her. He took both of her hands in his. “Hey. I know you’re scared. But you’re not alone. We’re going to help you. Maybe by working together we can control our powers so that bad things don’t happen. My roommate has been helping me train. Maybe you and I can help each other?”

He let go of her hands and put his hands on either side of her face, making her look him in the eye. “I’m here for you. Your brother is here for you, too. And because of that, bad things won’t happen. I swear I won’t let it.”

Kit hadn't meant to hurt Nate, she hadn't expected him to notice her unease let alone take her hands in his. She did manage to keep the needle from jabbing him straight in the palm of his hand, instead, it pricked the side of his thumb. Her voice was a bare whisper of sound as she spoke, her eyes shimmering with suppressed tears, "I just want it to go away." While Kit enjoyed fantasy novels, she had never been a fan of stories like Spider-man, the X-men or the Incredible Hulk. So the idea of having powers whether due to a genetic leap, or an accident had never resonated with her.

“I don’t think it will,” Nate said softly. “But we don’t have to let it define us or control us.” He smiled. “Tell you what. Let’s not talk about it any more tonight. Tonight is just a young man and a young woman hanging out. No powers. Just people. That happens everywhere, right?” If it was two people who were into each other, I wouldn’t mind that either, he thought. He looked at his thumb and noticed he was bleeding. “Huh. Didn’t feel that. Those needles must be sharp! I didn’t get any on you or your needlepoint, did I?”

Kit had been afraid that would prove to be the case, since when had her life run smooth? She sucked in a shuddering breath, managing a shaky smile for Nate even as one of the tears that had been shimmering slipped free and ran slowly down her cheek. "Alright. Just a couple of crazy kids right?" When he saw the blood smeared over the side of his thumb, she looked apologetic. "I'm sorry. I... I didn't mean... Very sharp." she stammered, even as she checked her work. Getting his blood on her wasn't her concern, the needle point she hoped to sell for college expenses was. "It's fine. Are you? Do you need a band-aid? I think I have some in my room."

Nate met her eyes. “I’m okay. I didn’t even feel it. But a band aid would be nice. In...your room, right?”

Kit always kept band-aids close, given how often she tended to prick her own fingers sewing or doing needlepoint. She nodded and got to her feet. "I'll get them."

“Okay,” Nate said. He understood that he wasn’t invited to come along. He wasn’t about to pressure her into letting him in her private space. So he sat back down and looked at his model’s instructions while holding pressure on his thumb.

He heard the door open and turned to look at Kit returning, but was surprised to see a different brunette woman come in. He gave her a polite smile. “Oh, hello. Sorry, I thought you were my friend Kit coming back.” He stood to shake her hand, but then thought better of it and pulled it back. “Sorry. I cut myself. Kit is getting me a band-aid. I’m Nate.”

The new woman smiled back and laughed at Nate’s awkwardness. “That’s okay. Thanks for not getting blood on me! I’m Misty. I’m just checking out the common areas. Seeing what’s around. What’s going on here?”

“Um, my friend and I are doing crafts,” he said with a sheepish smile. “I’m working on a model, and she’s doing needlepoint.”

"Got it!" Kit called out as she hurried back into the lounge, waving the band-aid in front of her. Seeing the stranger, she blushed a little, "Here Nate." She passed over the band-aid, giving Misty an awkward wave. "Hello.... I'm Kit." She looked Misty over curiously, thinking she looked vaguely familiar.

“Hi, Kit! I’m Misty!” She had a wide, friendly smile and waved to Kit excitedly from where she was standing. “Nate here was just telling me you’re doing some crafts?”

“Yeah,” Nate replied a bit nervously. “She came to see what was going on in the common room. Thanks, by the way.” He quickly put on the band-aid and smiled at Kit.

"My pleasure." Kit told Nate, smiling back at him before she gave her attention back to Misty. "I do needlepoint and sewing." Kit tilted her head to the side. "What about you? You into crafts?"

"I am!" Misty replied, and the three continued talking and crafting into the evening, having made a new friend.
